J Tomlinson is working on a £2.6m million contract to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services for a new development at Keele University.
The company has been appointed by main contractor Bouygues to undertake the M&E work for the university’s multi-million-pound, state-of-the-art Smart Innovation Hub facility, which will house both Keele Business School and incubated companies.
This is the second project that J Tomlinson has undertaken for the university, and follows the refurbishment of Lennard Jones Laboratories, delivered by the company’s commercial refurbishment team in 2016.
The latest project includes work that spans the entire three-storey building – including the roof, where the plant will be installed, as well as a photovoltaic system.
To be known as the Denise Coates Foundation Building, the landmark iconic 47,000 sq ft development is due for completion in 2019.

The M&E works will include under-floor heating, radiators, ventilation, electrical and data including cabinets and patching system, AV system containment and wiring, induction loop, LED lighting, emergency lighting and signage, PV roof panels, roof plant, air handling units, CCTV system, and connections to floor drain, as well as street lighting.
This is the latest in a number of different projects undertaken by J Tomlinson at various universities across the UK. The company has completed three refurbishment projects for the University of Warwick alone this year, and at the start of 2018 finished a construction and M&E, indoor and external redevelopment, at the University of Nottingham’s Portland Building. It has also undertaken a recent £1m commercial refurbishment at the University of Sheffield.
The new building at Keele University has been designed by RIBA award-winning and Sterling Prize-nominated architects BDP. In keeping with the University’s green ethos, the facility has been planned with a focus on sustainability, resulting in a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
