Museum exhibition project management specialist Focus is celebrating the opening of the Night Fever: Designing Club Culture exhibition at V&A Dundee which unveiled on 1st May.

Developed by Vitra Design Museum in Germany and ADAM – Brussels Design Museum – the exhibition is the first to explore the relationship between club culture from the 1960s to today and V&A Dundee will be the only UK venue for this unique exhibition.

Nottingham-based Focus was the project manager, employer’s agent, and quantity surveyor for the exhibition, which charts how nightclub design has changed and developed.

Appointed just before the pandemic struck, Focus faced the challenges of extensive programme alterations, stricter on-site guidelines, and remote working. Now, following the gradual lifting of lockdown restrictions in Scotland, Night Fever: Designing Club Culture has opened.

“V&A Dundee is one of Focus’ key clients and we were thrilled to have been appointed to project manage Night Fever: Designing Club Culture,” said Focus partner Eleanor Clarke. “Like many businesses, we’ve had to overcome significant challenges and alter the way we operate due to the pandemic, but we all made it work through clear communication, strong partnerships and regular risk assessments.

“This is a fascinating exhibition that we’re proud to have delivered. In those famous words by the Bee Gees in Night Fever – ‘we know how to show it’.”

Night Fever: Designing Club Culture includes a new section on Scotland’s unique and distinct club culture, exploring how the Scottish club scene holds closer ties to the music and influences of Chicago, Detroit and Europe than London clubs. Running until 9th January 2022, it also features nightclubs from around the world in places like New York, Paris, London and Berlin.

Focus is one of the country’s leading consultants in the museum exhibition sector having worked with many of the UK’s major museums on exhibitions, refurbishments, and other projects, undertaking a range of roles including project management, quantity surveyor and contract administrator, working collaboratively with the client team, designers and contractors to deliver projects to both budget and schedule. The company has been privileged to have been appointed to work on previous projects at V&A Dundee including Hello, Robot. Design Between Human and Machine, and Mary Quant, and is currently planning for a new and exciting exhibition Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer.

Focus, with offices in London, Nottingham and Leicester, is a multi-disciplinary company offering a range of services across different sectors. Focus divides its services into three sections – Create, Deliver and Assess – and offers funding, business planning and economic development through the Create division, and quantity surveying, project management and building surveying through the Deliver department. The firm’s Assess team advises on sustainable buildings, building physics, compliance and planning, and on-site testing.
